Duck Flat Community Garden is a beautiful space which provides a venue where volunteers give their time to grow produce, flowers and seedlings utilising co-operative and healthy organic principles.

The Garden was initiated by the Adelaide Hills Community Health Service. It is now a collaborative project between Mount Barker Community Centre and the community. It is a beautiful space for physical and passive activities and provides a venue for the teaching, demonstrating and growing of produce, utilising co-operative and healthy organic principles.

This beautiful garden is run and maintained by volunteers so if you would like to join us and learn gardening skills, improve physical and mental health, make new friends and contribute to your community, please come along and meet us or contact Mount Barker Community Centre for more information.

Duck Flat Community Garden currently boasts abundant garden beds, seats, wheel accessible pathways, a hot shade house, a pizza oven and meeting place, dragon seats, a native shelterbelt, fruit trees, a comprehensive  composting system, activity shed, various artworks and a ‘playboat’.

There are over 35 vegetable beds, some with permanent plantings such as asparagus and herbs. Several Beds are raised over  a metre for people who cannot bend, others are slightly lower for those who need to sit and are also easily accessed by wheelchairs. The beds above are  ‘Wicking’ beds — designed to be water-wise, whereby the plants are watered by capillary method from below, and require very little overhead watering.

Occasionally we have plant sales, we will advertise them so please check either the Duck Flat or Community Centre facebook page.

This boat was donated to the garden in 2005 by a local wooden boat manufacturer. The jetty not only ‘situates’ the boat, but is also part of its safety upgrade. It has proven to be a great drawcard for children of all ages, especially for birthday parties.

Art works are a special feature of the garden and there are many spread throughout... in unexpected places.

The Exercise Circuit is available to patients from the Cardiac Unit of Mount Barker District Hospital and anyone with balance problems.

The Heart Garden was developed  in collaboration with the Bereavement Group of the Health Service.
Intended to be a place of quiet contemplation, it is situated in a slight hollow facing away from the main body of the garden.
A sprightly older client of the  Bereavement Group helped establish the garden in August 2005 and has been its principal gardener since then.

The Pizza Oven is a draw card in ’non-fire hazard’ times and is available for use by the community
